IMO it would be so much better if you had some grass texture, but that's down to how hard it will be to implement all colors schemes to it. You really do have a chance to win!

What language?
posted to Ask by mkhoi

@Ntechh Rust has a very different fundamental idea to C++. It erased the idea of pointers and memory management and race conditions with its "ownership" model, so it negates the largest problem in C++, memory leakage. Low level access is similar, and I am not saying that Rust is the future, but there's no reason C++ will stay for many years because of its flaws. The problem with C++ libraries is that many of them are dated and while not all are, it's a problem. Also, C++ tooling is subpar, with no well known package manager and single way to use it.

@Ntechh some things like sockets and libraries are difficult in C++, and they are big compromises because of the language's age. Also the syntax, even in C++17, is mostly dated. There are alternatives popping right now like Rust that have similar performance and all that fixed. I'd recommend you to just check it out, just to know it is there. I don't use it but its ideas are interesting.

JavaScript, unlike almost all other languages, is the building block of the web, so it will stay useful for a long time. It has a really modern and intuitive syntax if you use ES6+, can be used for servers, and unless you're programming high-performance code, it's my favorite language.

I know this is a bit nit-picky, but since I have almost no complaints, the animation to go to the back menu moves the text because you change the width, not the scale. This is both bad for performance and seems weird if you focus on it. I would move to transform: scales

@JOSHUAKONDUR Python is not a good programming language for games though. If you wanna go more serious with games, you should pick a game framework or engine and work with its language. I use XNA and C#.

First of all: No games are written with Python or Ruby (there is PyGame but it's not too good). However, you shouldn't start with the goal of games. Games are difficult to write (I wrote some games in JavaScript), especially in languages like C++ where it's even harder.

You should start with an easier programming language to learn like JavaScript or Python or Ruby, and once you know how to code, start experimenting with games.

@NikithaVS wdym start with html and css? HTML and CSS are for design and markup, they don't even suggest what programming is. Python is better for starters (that's what I started with) because it has a very simple syntax (that's why all of the psuedo-code online looks like Python code) and it's general purpose so you can do anything with it.

Java or C++??
posted to Ask by MichelleA8

MS Visual C++ .NET is really not a good platform, Microsoft is aiming for you to use C# instead. Java has been used for quite some time and it will stay relevant for long enough, thanks to Android and many big projects using Java.
I'd say you should go for Java.

BTW: The syntax of Java is really C-like, just like most programming languages. That means once you've learned one of the syntaxes, the syntax of the other programming language is very similar.

@HQuan there's this experimental game engine I heard about called Superpowers http://superpowers-html5.com/index.en.html. It's 2D and 3D, 100% web based and one of you runs a server for Superpowers and the other one uses a browser to make the game. It's really awesome, I tried it once but didn't get far (I am not filled with determination). It's fully open source and I recommend you give it a try.

I like sandbox games or puzzle games best. For 2D games you should start experimenting with Love2D and Lua but then get to a real game engine. If you want to make simple sketch games, I would recommend using JavaScript for games because everyone can play web games.
A game engine is not multiplayer, you need to make a multiplayer server (usually).
