WINNER ANNOUNCED: What would you do with $5,000?
posted to Announcements by katyadee

Hey, great concept! I'm really excited about my submission, and would probably spend some of the money working to grow it into a real site. The rest of it would be split between a local non-profit I run and this amazing organization in my hometown that delivers supplies to struggling school districts (I volunteered there a lot during the school year)!

Python Experts

Really, it depends on how much time you are dedicating to studying every day. However, the absolute best way to learn is through personal projects! Make apps, websites, and machine learning algorithms whenever you get the chance, and you will force yourself to continue learning while genuinely enjoying what you do.

As for being an "expert", I think that's mostly a myth. Have you contributed to the Python source code? If not, there are probably things you don't know about the language, and that's okay! Good programming is all about learning the amount that's right for you and your goals, and projects are a great way to figure that out.

UPDATE: WINNERS POSTPONED // ✨Check back here for our Music Hackathon results! ✨

@GrinInTheBin @GeorgesB I definitely do not recommend changing it. I emailed them about this and it's not allowed, and they're doing a pretty intensive check for cheaters before announcing the winners. You are right to wait -- it's only one more day!

If you do want to keep working in it, you can use repl.it's "Fork" feature to create a copy of the project and make changes there. And in case you need help in the future, the best way to reach Katya is via email. Hope this helps and good luck to everyone! :)

Nice! I like the final design of the front page it looks good even on a super wide screen! (Although lastpass thinks it's a password! Lol!) :)

🎶SynthSource: Discover, learn about, create, and share music on a brand new platform!

@hayaodeh Hi! Thank you so much :)

I did actually create the whole thing on my own, and it was a lot of work but I think I learned a ton in the process. Design has always been very important to me, and the sheer scope of this site really put my CSS and layout skills to the test :)

Honestly, I was a bit scared at the start, but using repl.it was a great choice! It's pretty cool that I was able to make a fairly involved website with accounts, API connections, and a custom domain all from a single repl.

Over the summer, I'm definitely going to keep working on it! And I also hope to document the development process a bit more to help Replers with similarly ambitious projects in mind who might be struggling to get started.

Thanks for checking it out!

@katyadee @RojerGS One thing that kind of worries me is all of the issue with copyright :(

A lot of cool ideas just wouldn't be legal without tons of paperwork that none of us are really in a position to do.

@Kognise Thank you! Same to you! I used your site to find some of the fonts actually :)

@amasad Awesome! This is great news :)

After the judging is finished and we can make changes, I will be sure to update SynthSource to use requirements.txt. I'm really glad the site was useful to you, I had a lot of fun participating in the competition!

Infinite loops on server side
posted to Ask by ebest

I didn't review the code, but why not have the client send a heartbeat every 10 seconds? Basically, they just send a tiny packet to the server at regular intervals to say "Hey, I'm still here!". If the packet isn't received on time, then you can assume they left / got disconnected and take it from there.

@ArpanDhatt Nah, I just meant that editing it after the deadline would be cheating, lol.

@ArpanDhatt Yeah, I noticed that issue too. Also, you might want to add more instructions on the site. Although you can't do this now as you'd be disqualified for cheating... maybe create a fork and keep working on it. Great concept!

Although you can't edit this since it's after the deadline and you'd be disqualified.. I just wanted to let you know that the game does not work.

If you do keep working on it after the competition that might be something to look into!
