Basics Needed

Brand new, starting out. Can someone please direct me where to find specific guidance on using the repl.it editor window? It took me two hours to discover that the down arrow gets me to the next line to enter a command. This sort of detail must be somewhere, but I don't know how to word a search to find such things. Every time I was hitting enter, it obv. was causing an error and not giving me a place to begin a new command. Basic help for a virgin beginner, Please???? Basic general command guidelines such as this and more will be highly welcome. No one seems to ever post this fundamental information.

@MrEconomical Thank you. I have read and looked over this several times, but I am not seeing the most elementary guidance such as what to do after writing a minimal line of code in the editor, such as a print command, so as to get to the next line.

Are you talking about a manual for hotkeys, editor preferences, and such?

@mwilki7 Hi -- I am absolutely not sure. I have looked at hours of tutorials and guides by now. I thought by virtue of the fact that no one has specified, hit ENTER after your line of code, it was a given, but when I hit enter on the editor page for repl.it, it merely divides the line, with the closing parenthesis ending up on the following line, causing an incorrect command. When I hit TAB, it moves out the parenthesis further, and again, I have an incorrect line of code. I can't seem to find in any turtorial, video or otherwise, what people are doing to get to that next line of code using this editor. It was completely random that I hit the down arrow, and the cursor went properly to the next line so I could begin another actual line of code. In other words, I am having trouble doing something as minimal as practice print commands. If I can't make that work, I'm not getting very far.
Thank you for your help.
Not knowing all the terminology and/or how its used is also a hindrance as I begin with this. Lots of terms and acronyms are used, but not always explained for a blatant beginner . . .

@MrEconomical Wow. Thanks for all the help. The only programming I've ever done before was HTML, hand-coded, and because of the linguistic nature of the language, I grabbed onto it pretty well. I have read several hundred references by programmers of how "easy" Python is and is no problem. I am using a barely 6 month old Chromebook that is completely new to me, and I'm wondering if that is part of the issue with using the repl.it editor page, and you want to call me a troll. Thanks a pantload. All I want is to understand why the Tab key is not the answer to get me beyond the last parenthesis, or what is the correct way and apparently you are just some other overpaid, overintelligent programmer who has to demean someone with no computer science background.

@useratl
how do you know how to use markdown and not know how to use a text editor?

MrEconomical (2236)

@useratl sorry if I was offensive, I was just a bit skeptical ¯_(ツ)_/¯

if you actually have a problem, can you show me some images or link the repl with the problem, then I can help. otherwise, repl should be pretty easy to use because at its core its just a text editor.

@mwilki7 When I learned HTML, apx 2001, I used Notepad and would always then run it thru a browser. Very proud of my handcoding skills at the time. I love all this new stuff, but it is NEW to me now. I also used way more books than online resources then.

@MrEconomical Thank you for your apology.
Now, for example, I just wrote a print statement. The cursor ended up between my last character and the final quotation mark. When I hit ENTER, the final quotes/parenth jumps to the next line. If I keep hitting ENTER, it continues to jump to subsequent lines.
If I hit TAB, it just pushes the final quote/parenth to the right by several spaces.
Ultimately, I discovered if I hit the down arrow, that is the only way it seems like the cursor appears AFTER the final parenth., and only then when I hit ENTER will the cursor go to the start of the next line where I can write a command.
Further, it seems to only happen in commands using the parenthesis.
This does not seem right, but if so, I don't understand why it has not been documented anywhere or at all referenced. Very discouraging when one is just starting out and it seems like you can't even easily write lines of code in an editor.
Hard to believe this was perceived as a troll.

@useratl
"Hard to believe this was perceived as a troll."
Hard to take you seriously when you use markdown and pretend to not know how to use a text editor.

MrEconomical (2236)

@useratl you can press the RIGHT arrow or CLICK at the end of the statement until your cursor goes after the last parentheses then hit enter

@mwilki7 Hi m; I thought I misread when you wrote "markdown" in conjunction with the text editor, and meant markup. I didn't know there had been transformation in the industry and now there is such a thing as "markdown". So, my response here was probably not as accurate as intended, due to distance from HTML for some years.

Additionally, as to the sarcasm, on the front of the forum it says this is a friendly place for assistance, and I expected no less.

Thanks all.
