On a <form> in html, how do you save responses?

The purpose of the form is to simply receive input, it does not save responses although if you want you, can save the result of the form as a variable like this one,

<!DOCTYPE html><html> <head> <form id="answer">What is your name?</form> </head> <script> x=document.getElementById(answer).innerHTML </script> </html>
