What should we code?
katyadee (1066)

I've seen a couple of posts around here where people are asking what they should work on next. Let's use this space to brainstorm some cool projects.

amasad (1258)

I'd love to see more multiplayer game. We played @kaldisberzins game a lot but I'd like to see more games we can play together as a community. If they have social elements like chatting and not just shooting at each other then all the better!

kaldisberzins (259)

@katyadee I have gotten a team together and we are planning stuff and laying out some basic code

zhidao (1)

@kaldisberzins
For your multiplayer game, are you supposed to open the things that come out of the sky?

kaldisberzins (259)

@zhidao press F when they have landed and you are on top of them.

piguyinthesky (2)

@amasad Oh that's cool! I've actually been working on one that's up on Heroku but I'm thinking about moving it down here. Does anyone have a good example for setting up an express framework with node on replit?

zhidao (1)

@amasad I actually combined @kaldisberzins's hop-fighter, @JSer's chat, and w3schools's open and close model.
check it out at practice.zhidao.repl.co.

ThatSmart (42)

A community made programming language. Only problem is nobody can agree on the syntax.

rediar (88)

@ThatSmart And what language to make it in. Sounds fun though!

Vandesm14 (497)

@rediar Maybe a Flowchart-based language. I read an article that visual programming is (hopefully) going to be the next big thing: https://www.oreilly.com/ideas/toward-the-next-generation-of-programming-tools

rediar (88)

@Vandesm14 sounds like a interesting idea.

Vandesm14 (497)

@ArchieMaclean Why not? It's definitely a cool challenge.

ArchieMaclean (541)

@Vandesm14 Yeah it's a fine project.
I was just saying that I hoped flow-chart "programming" wouldn't overtake "proper" text programming languages.

dotcomboom (57)

Honestly I'd like to see a flexible student planner/to do list. More of an agenda feel, but letting you set class times and schedules if you want (don't require it to add a class though; this is what bothered me with My Study Life since my schedules always become inconsistent). Also importing from places like Moodle would be a plus and a huge timesaver. And syncing across devices for offline usage!

katyadee (1066)

@dotcomboom I love that we're all on the same page about this! Someone should create it.

katyadee (1066)

to piggy back off the "to do" list idea, i'd love a habit tracker. some exist, but nothing that great. an opportunity to create something neat & experiment around improving something that exists in spades...just not in a great way.

heyitsmarcus (281)

@katyadee I love the idea of a habit tracker, because even though there are some out there, you can get super creative with it! Love it!

eankeen (540)

Like some of the others mentioned, multiplayer games are an awesome idea! Even just simple ones would be fun!

katyadee (1066)

@eankeen We need more games so I can start sharing them for #ScreenshotSaturday.

EthanJustice (70)
  • Repl themes page, where users can create and share themes for the website and editors
  • Community-made landing page which changes at a set time (i.e. parallax landing page, Pride month, etc., like the Code Jam but for the website itself)
  • MSPaint type editor in the browser, or Word, expanding to editors beyond programming
  • More templates for beginners
  • Katya/TimChen praise page
  • Github Pages type thing, maybe only personal pages for the time being
  • Tag filters on the Talk pages, to narrow down results to languages, frameworks, concepts, etc.
katyadee (1066)

@EthanJustice Hey! Have you seen repl.it/ templates?

katyadee (1066)

@EthanJustice Agreed on the Katya praise page. 😉

EthanJustice (70)

@katyadee Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean like starter templates, I meant like reskinning repl.it itself. Sorry for the confusion!

Vandesm14 (497)

What about a GUI DB editor for https://www.jsonstore.io/? I've been meaning to do it, but instead of waiting for me, why not someone else get a head start?

ryanhcode (85)

I’d love to see this. @Vandesm14

heyitsmarcus (281)

@Vandesm14 Just on an awesome tangent, there is a great NodeJS package for working with jsonstore.io and it's called jsonstore.io. It's available here on repl.it, as well, and I've found it's super awesome. The documentation for it is here: https://www.npmjs.com/package/jsonstore.io

katavie (8)

An idea I've had in my Notes for a while is a tool (probably a browser extension?) that tracks how much distance you've scrolled! It could calculate fun facts like, "you've scrolled the equivalent of a 5k" or "x% of your scrolling is on Twitter"

katyadee (1066)

@katavie That's awesome! I love this idea.

TheFlooBearer (2)

@katavie Hmm.. Maybe that could be a mouse attachment as well.. That way, we could have a dot that would be applied to the mouse, and there could be a sensor in the mouse. Then, the sensor would transmit the data (How many times the dot was picked up by the sensor) into a file, and that could be converted using a simple multiplication function. The function would probably have it so that the circumference of the wheel is multiplied by the amount of times that the dot is picked up. That would give us a rough estimate of how far you've scrolled using the mouse wheel. The other thing we could do, is make a program that will read the resolution of your screen, convert that into a metric measurement (I forget if those two correspond), then see how much the scroll scrolls. Another program would count that amount and place it into a text document, or if you wanted to be fancy, an HTML file with a bit more graphics and confetti gifs.

Do I talk too much?

replitcode (101)

So HI guys! I think most of you know me, if you don't then hi I'm Lukas (aka Replitcode) and i was told by Enigma of the WhizNerdz that if you want to create new apps/games/langs/basically anything, then you should come and join the WhizNerdz Discord Server! We are looking for 2 admins and 2 moderators, and it will be on a first come first serve basis! Can't wait to see you there!!!

ryanhcode (85)

If you want people to join you should post the invite code @replitcode

ryanhcode (85)

Do you have an invite code? @replitcode

EthanJustice (70)

I think we should also build a very large calculator web app, to calculate a lot of different formulas and types of math. Here I'm building an exponent calculator.

ryanhcode (85)

Cool! @EthanJustice I think it could use just plain parsing if a single strong instead of having to enter the base and exponent separately.

TheFlooBearer (2)

@EthanJustice We could also have a bunch of physics calculations as well

EthanJustice (70)

I'd like to see a community made text-based game, maybe using HTML/CSS/JS. We could all collaborate to build it, style it, make it functional, and write it.

heyitsmarcus (281)

This one is another beginner to intermediate project for really any kind of developer! It's a take on the game of "Simon", the memory game. Mine uses Michael Jackson sounds instead of buzzes, though, so I think it's a little more entertaining haha

Since this is browser based, all the source code is available to you through the developer tools in your browser!

https://repl.it/@heyitsmarcus/SimonCubed

heyitsmarcus (281)

Another project idea for web developers is a paint-like app! This one was a ton of fun to make and use, because you can be super creative with it. I never made mine mobile friendly sad face, but it should work with just about any desktop size. This type of project is more for intermediate JavaScript developers, but beginners can start it and really learn a lot!

Below is the repl with the source code for the project

https://repl.it/@heyitsmarcus/SketchMeh

heyitsmarcus (281)

One of the most basic projects, that can also turn into something incredibly useful, is a To-Do List. This is a screenshot of one I made some time ago using Vanilla JS and localStorage. It's great for beginner to intermediate developers using JavaScript.

Below is the repl with the source code for the project

https://repl.it/@heyitsmarcus/To-Do-List

heyitsmarcus (281)

@katyadee Thank you, Katya! I have a few more ideas to post for Web Developers, as well! I hope they make for good ideas, anyways.

katyadee (1066)

@heyitsmarcus You should post them here! I really want to get the conversation going.

Wetyuip (4)

What SHOULD I code? I use c++ and SFML I could do something cool... BUT I HAVE NO IDEAS! Halp and thanks in advance! :)

katyadee (1066)

@Wetyuip Hopefully we can help you out! What are your goals?

Wetyuip (4)

@katyadee To make something fun but not requiring fancy graphics... perhaps an new spin on a classic game?

katyadee (1066)

@Wetyuip You should check out some of our tutorials - lots of good starting points for that on Learn :)

SPQR (344)

@Wetyuip I've got a project going in C++ and SFML that i think shows a bit of promise, want to take a look at it?

SPQR (344)

@Wetyuip To clarify, I'm asking if you want to collab. https://repl.it/@SPQR/A-new-game

durgaMacrometa (5)

Would anyone be interested in building a demo app on a geo-distributed globally available low latency data platform? I have some ideas and would be happy to assist in flushing out details. You can see more about the platform here...

madmonster (7)

AI is a very important area of project, especially in modern days like now.

katyadee (1066)

@madmonster What kind of AI are you gonna create?

madmonster (7)

@katyadee Probably I would create AI for robotics (Though I would have to use a downloaded IDE for modules like OS and gpiozero, which is for the raspberry pi's GPIO system of electronics)

EthanJustice (70)
  • Stats for individuals, like total posts, time spent on platform (if possible), total repls, etc.
  • Cake day!
ReshiramWolfu (61)

Visual Novels! We could all work together to make Textures, sprites and everything needed! Just need some code to pull it off!

katyadee (1066)

@ReshiramWolfu YES! I will work on this with you, if you are serious!

ReshiramWolfu (61)

@katyadee Yup! I have started one of my own on Ren'Py, but you are welcome to to work with me on another.

ethanheys (38)

@ReshiramWolfu is u a furry or some thing

ReshiramWolfu (61)

@ethanheys no? owo?
No, But i do love anime!

ReshiramWolfu (61)

@ethanheys I don't know that one. Madoka Magica and Danganronpa are good though

ethanheys (38)

@ReshiramWolfu ok i watched some wise mans grandson if you know what that is

ReshiramWolfu (61)

@ethanheys not really, but sounds cool

26325001 (18)

I hear Hacker News has an API. Maybe somebody could make a little widget app?

triptych (3)

I'm working on a new interactive fiction tool that you'll be able to use on your phone.

triptych (3)

@katyadee You can follow along here: https://repl.it/@triptych/Super-Tiny-IF-Maker-STIM will be a super simple IF maker that will let you create interactive fiction games and export them to HTML to put on sites like itch.io

katyadee (1066)

@triptych hahahaha. just post 'em here. get me that engagement, @triptych!

RobertDerry (0)

Does anyone have any ideas for websites etc. I know very basic python and some Javascript but my speciality is in CSS and HTML. More specificaly the web security aspect of that but not that that really matters.

Thanks!

Rob

MohdAlam (0)

you should to the problem based on which topic you have learned solve the multiple problems to get master in that topic

Lolanator365 (8)

please could someone make a code that opens something like google but it opens it in repl so that we can play games in school without getting blocked

RobertDerry (0)

@Lolanator365 Hey I am a fellow student. My school is a "Google School" so google sites is unblocked. If you looks up "unblocked games google sites" it should come up with unblocked games

GhostPhantom (6)
