What's your favorite thing about Repl.it? What about your least favorite?

What's your favorite thing about Repl.it/browser-based IDEs in general? What about your least favorite? (Slash if you could add any feature, what would you add?)

It's honestly the best Chromebook supported IDE and I love that repl.it simulates the experience you'd have on a regular IDE. Multiplayer is another great thing, web-based anything never does a good job at two people on the same project but repl.it pulled it off pretty well.

Best part: Multiplayer, Talk (Other than the point of the web site, these are the best extra parts)

New Features: Persistent multiplayer, subscribing to people, and better file writing!

Favorite thing(s):

  • Portability (the fact that i can access it from anywhere, even my chromebook)
  • ease of collaboration (multiplayer) and sharing
  • The community :) (just wanna mention that i'm under "more top contributors" in all time, past 7 days, and past 30 days, and i'm pretty darn proud of that)

Least favorite things:

  • Lack of configurability (you have to use polygott to do anything advanced)

SLASH

I was thinking today that it would be nice if there was like a quick access for files (like where it says the filename at the top of the editor in the IDE there could be a couple tabs with different files you're currently working on, would be nice when working on large and/or complex projects), or even viewing more than one file at once, like side by side or something

I guess that could be dumbed down to more maneuverability with the editor window but you get the idea (i hope)

@SPQR What kind of things would you like to configure? Also, do you have any issues with using polygott? :P Just curious.

1

@timmy_i_chen

  • The Run button (perhaps allow us to use custom bash scripts, we can't use compiler flags or libraries w/o official support without using polygott)
  • Syntax highlighting (the C++ syntax highlighting for example seems to get no attention, red lines EVERYWHERE and it doesn't recognize custom types or classes)

There's other things that I can't think of at the moment, but the idea is that the IDE pretty much is a take it or leave it, there's not much customization that one can do. I believe that amasad said that you guys were going to make a major push for open source over the summer, so if that's the case then I am quite excited. :)

As far as issues with using polygott it's really just that pretty much all the code sense isn't present, which is pretty self explanatory as to why it's a problem. It's not much better than using plain Notepad or any non-formatted text editor. As Thanos says, it's a small price to pay for salvation but it's still not ideal.

@katyadee Multiplayer is my favorite thing, same with file uploads. Least favorite, how unconfigurable it is (not to be rude or anything, I love Repl its the only coding IDE my school doesnt know exists)

1

@Masy Thanks for the feedback! What kind of configurations would you want to do to your repls?

3

I dislike the inconsistency with saving files via the CLI or via function calls within the program. However, I love the fluidity of creating a new project - no difficulties whatsoever. And multiplayer is really nice!

3

Favorite thing: It's free!

Least favorite thing: Programmatic file writing is wonky.

4

@a5rocks Well yes, as they say...

The moon belongs to everyone, the best things in life are freeeeee

2

@katyadee OwO did someone say Frank Sinatra?

@katyadee
Are you ready?
Free, free, baby,
Boy, when you look at me,
Do you judge me by my cover?
Got to be kiddin' me, to think that I'm that kind of lover
I don't mean to disagree, sorry, you can't buy my kisses
Open your eyes and see,
True love comes for free
I'm keepin' my heart open, and hopin' you won't stab me in it
'Cause I've been in love before, and when I had to pay I didn't
I'll lose my sanity, tryin' to measure your intentions
What do you want from me?
How much will it be?
No more than you're willing to give
'Cause you won't pay nothin' for this good lovin', it's for free
And I won't make you promises,
I'll just do all I can to be your lover 'cause I understand
The best things in life are free,
Now that I've discovered what you mean to me
The best things in life are free,
Now that we've got each other
The best things in life are free
Come on now,
Oh, yeah
Alright, I like that,
Now, Janet
Oh, Luther
I know you are my baby, my one and only baby
You said it twice, I'll say it thrice my baby baby baby
I've got so much for you,
And it's easy to give it when I know you feel the same way too
That's all I expect from you,
Just do all that you can to be my lover 'cause I understand,
I do, (Janet: hoo) I do (Janet: hoo, hoo)
They say,
The best things in life are free,
Now that I've discovered what you mean to me
The best things in life are free,
Now that we've got each other
The best things in life are free
The best things in life are free,
Now that I've discovered what you mean to me
The best things in life are free,
Now that we've got each other
The best things in life are free
BBD tell 'em 'bout free
Sister sister kickin' all that jazz
Ain't it funny, honey? Huh? what you never had
A lot of bone structure, I can make it last
A minute to win it, I deep fill the past
Materio went perio, so get the info
You know, I know, it's not about the dough
So maybe baby, if you want to be my lady
I'll forget the riches and the other itches
Mo' money, mo' money, Jam & Lewis here we go
Mo' money, mo' money, Luther, Janet here we go
Mo' money, mo' money, Biv, DeVoe here we go
Ralph T. (that's me). The best things in life are for free
Free, baby
No more than you're willing to give
'Cause you won't pay me nothin' for this good lovin', it's for free
And I won't make you promises
You see,
I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be, we're gonna be, I'm gonna
Be do, The very best I can, to be your lover 'cause I understand
It feels good, it feels good, it feels good, it feels so good
Ha, ho, oh, wait a minute, I still don't think they've got it
Let's tell them one more time
Check it out!
Everybody needs to know that,
The best things in life are free,
Now that I've discovered what you mean to me
The best things in life are free,
Now that we've got each other
The best things in life are free
The best things in life are free,
Now that I've discovered what you mean to me
The best things in life are free,
Now that we've got each other
The best things in life are free
Don't ya know, don't ya know,
The very best love in life is free,
And I'm free, yeah

My favorite thing and least favorite thing is code intelligence. It helps me find errors in my code and it also helps me understand my code. What I don't like is that it can't find errors in star imports. It will think every nonexistant function is from the star import

2

My favorite thing is it being an easy to use ide with a large catalog of languages working on many devices. Geaneraly my only greivences are bad mobile support which hopefully repl mobile will fix. slash add more esolangs/weird languages would love to mess with befunge in here.

2

Least favourite thing:
there is a lack of ligatures

2

Favorite: Repl.it is a 101% cloud tool, which is awesome for this Chrome OS enthusiast.

Least favorite: the editor's keystrokes involving Fn function keys are overridden by the corresponding custom keys of Chrome OS devices and keyboards and can't be remapped, which makes those handy Repl.it keystrokes effectively unavailable.

Bonus least favorite: the spam in Repl Talk, such as the posts containing only junk text or nonsense.

Slash: REPLS with optional persistent state.

3

@PaoloAmoroso You can press the top row keys while holding the Search key to press Fn keys: Hold Search + Arrow Left to press F1

2

Favorite things:

  • free
  • Enough storage space
    Dislike:
  • Lack of low level languages
  • Lack of downloading options
    Slash:
  • Add a ability to download as an exe
  • Add low level languages
  • Add a ability to pay for more storage, however you don't have to pay every month, you pay once and get a little bit more (like a flash drive), and configurable memory limits (EX: I could set a memory limits of 15 KB or 1.5 MB)
1

@RoylatGnail What other languages would you want to see on Repl.it? :)

1

@timmy_i_chen
Assembly of INTEl and AMD
also binary

1

@timmy_i_chen Oh, and can you also add Arduino and Raspberry PI coding?

2

Favorite thing:ease of use and involvement with the community.
Least favorite thing: lack of effort (don't mean that in a rude way) put into the actual ide.

2

@theangryepicbanana Not rude! Feedback helps us improve. What do you mean by that?

2

@katyadee it's just that the ide isn't very configurable, and it is just very bad on mobile (I also dislike the desktop editor and its color schemes)

2

@katyadee it doesn't work for me, but I'd like to be able to use the website

1

My favorite things is that there are possible ways to libaries. My least things is that the community is very slow when you ask a question about a language. It takes forever for an answer for a coding question.which is why i quit js and pyxel because no one answered my questions.I would think a tutorial and refernce book for languages because It would make less of an annoyance because bcps blocked certain websites on their laptops and also the whole love2d website. The codea app has one and it is the best and well designed.

1

I love the ease of use.

What I don't love is the lack of PHP support in HTML repls. #weneedphp2019

1

Favorite: Free, fast and very easy to get started

Least Favorite: GitHub integration is not trivial. Doable, but requires extra steps. Would be good to have at least one private project.
