👾We're hosting a Game Jam! 👾

Our First Game Jam!

You asked, we answered: on March 18 at 12:00 AM PST, we’re kicking off our next challenge!

The theme & our grand prize

You might have heard that our grand prize is 1BTC ($3,829.00 USD... give or take depending on the day!). In light of that, the theme is cash. Crypto, fiat, paper, coin... whatever cash means to you. ;-)

How to submit

Submitting is easy! All you have to do is:

  1. Start a project by picking a language/framework. We recommend checking out Pygame, LOVE2D, Tkinter, and Java Swing.
  2. Share your repl on the challenge board

Make sure to do this by April 18, 2019 at 11:59 PM PST.

Our winners

First Place & Best Overall Game
Best Individual Game
Best Group Game
Best Story
Best Graphics
Community Vote (Honorable Mention)

How to work in a group

You can submit individually, but for this challenge, you’re also more than welcome to submit as a group. Groups can collaborate together in real time using Multiplayer—learn more about how to use it here.

(If you want to work in a group but can’t find one, we’ll be informally matching people on our Discord server under >Challenge >#matchmaker.)

Starting with tutorials for inspiration

We know designing a game in a month is no easy feat. Here are a few tutorials to help get you started:

I really love this website. I really do. It is such a great tool for people with no experience to just sit down and start trying. There's no downloads or installs, no terminal commands, no nothing, just make an account and go. It's such a great idea to give to the world. However, I have 1 tiny hitch about this new multiplayer system. I think it works too much like... An actual multiplayer system. I don't want to have to wait for my coding partner to be online for me to edit it (we're developing the website for our school's robotics team), I want to be able to edit the document in real time regardless of whether he's online or not. If I understand correctly, there is a cooldown time if the owner of the document does nothing, in which case the connection is shut down. If multiplayer could instead be replaced with something like google docs' share and use whenever feature, that would turn this near perfect website to be even nearer perfect.

That's my two cents, anyways.

18

@pfunk we're on this. Multiplayer is still in beta and we're iterating on it. But let me tell you we plan to make it Multiplayer at heart!!

3

@pfunk same I don't like how the other person has to be on the program in order for me to edit the program, other than that, the website is awesome!

is the 1BTC prize only for the best overall game? if so, are there prizes for any of the other categories?

@KatyaDelaney Are the winners based of upvotes? If so, I think that is unfair because the people who submit later on, their project are at the bottom of the list. If anyone wants to see their game, they have to press see more or whatever. And as @h3xed said earlier, can we accept the prize as money instead of a bitcoin if we win?

2

@Helixable No, we have judges :-) Learn more here: repl.it/jam

9

subscribe to MobileGamer Su, and Pewdiepie

5

Extended deadline? It's also off by like 3 hours if it is...

3

@Mavrick yeah the countdown thing was programmed wrong. I think it's right now.

8

I have 2 questions:
1) Can we use any programming language?
2) Can we use frameworks?

3

@iamcooliguess Yes + yes. feel free to hmu with any questions

3

@KatyaDelaney Can we use something off the website, like Scratch? I know it might seem a little bit far from a "language," but it's really nice to use bc it's easy to make quick graphic design (and with my chromebook, it's a little bit difficult to do that on any other tool.)

2

@Heekup You can create graphics in Scratch, but you have to code the game on Repl.it.

1

@Heekup Lol. If we were doing Scratch I would probably win. I've been doing it for 3 years and I have 300+ followers.

1

@Helixable Nah dude that would be me xD hi

1

@PixlPixl Out of context, but do you know any Pyxel? I can't find any good tutorials and thought maybe you are the right person to approach xD

1

@iamcooliguess Hey, I'm doing a project to collect good tutorials. I will update the YouTube resource page tonight :-) Right now, it just has PyGame...

1
1

@iamcooliguess No, sorry. I know PyGame and various others but not Pyxel.

Do you desire to become more wealthy? Is life just not giving you what you want it to? Maybe you need to go on a journey for 6 small payments of $29.99. Journeys have worked out magnificent for our former customers including Odysseus and John F. Kennedy. Both were lifelong members of our subscription base. 6 small payments of $29.99 shouldn’t stop you from seeking glory, self-realization, and just plain survival. These 6 payments may just be the only obstacle stopping you from becoming who you want to be.

5

@ConnorKuziemko thanks, with this product I no longer need the repl.it bit coin prize, and neither will you for just 7 small payments of 40$

6

Super excited! Hyped up for this!

1

@theangryepicbanana LÒVE | LUA powered thingy. Is pretty easy to use if you know complex lenguajes. Is like talking in english but with symbols and letters. Pretty good. (Mr.Rescue was made in Love)

1

@IzanLarumbe my team and I have decided to use SDL and Perl 6

5

This is cool! will try to make something that other people have, but with a twist

5
2

@EmmanuelGkatong Please be nice to the community.

4

If we do win, can we take the pize as money instead of a bitcoin? I'm pretty sure most of us don't know how to use a bitcoin.

4

Do we have to know how to code for this competition? Because I just Know basics of C.

2

@MamickPradhan1 not necessarily :) you can team up with a coder or use this as an opportunity to learn

4

Also, will the winners that are not the First Place & Best Overall Game still get a prize?

3

So it says no early submissions but I assume we can at least start before the jam starts? or will ages of repls be tracked as well?

2
3

what thing will you give to the 2nd and 3rd winner???

3

What languages and technologies ?, wherever can run on repl.it?, can be web or only desktop ?

3

@BaniMontoya Anything is fair play as long as it runs on our site

3

Can we submit more than one project?

3

@ryanhallihan yes you can submit more then one project. The sky is the limit!

2

@seamuswalden3 🌌🌌🌌
I hope this emoji of the sky shows up... LOL.

3

Finally I would have something to do when I'm bored.

4

@Snowflake Happy to fill that void ;)

2

Did you all extend the deadline to the 19th?

1

@MarkKreitler I have the same question!!

1

@AkhilGupta I am also confused. Why would they extend it?

1

@Mavrick What's worse is that I want to avoid making changes in fear of being disqualified. Well, not like I would have done much this late..haha

1

@AkhilGupta Yeah. I've got a pretty good game and I worked so much on it last night, so I'm annoyed either way lol

1

@Mavrick I think it is fine...this way you finished things before the dealine, and can test it.. though I am like, kinda taking this day "off" and trying out others' submission..

1

@MarkKreitler I was just about to post this same question. LOL

1

@MarkKreitler @Mavrick @AkhilGupta @ebest - The countdown had an error, but the time posted on the FAQ was always correct. You have until midnight pacific time to work on/submit your game.

1

@themaka Thanks for the update!

1

@themaka Thanks! More time to work on it.

2

Hey @KatyaDelaney thanks for creating this challenge! Watch this space for our awesome new game! Also @KatyaDelaney thanks for interacting with us users constantly! Big support!

1

I have one question though, can we make a game related to any aspect of cash?

1

@KatyaDelaney thanks, look out for our game!

2

Can we make space jam jokes yet?

2

@NecrozmaSpin Oh... As long as they're appropriate...

2

i built a shelf to prepare for this competion

2

I'm interssted, but I have absolutly no idea what a cash themed game could be. An ATM simulator? I dont think so.
I have a lot of ideas for the theme money, but that's obviously not the same. Can anyone give me an idea to initiate my inspiration?

1

@Windar How about a Buisness simulator? You start off as a Lemon juice seller and you grow from there! Email me here for more details: [email protected]

2

@h3xed Hey there! You should join our Discord. repl.it/discord

1

@h3xed yeah, this could work, but it looks like a lot of graphic work.
since i'm not good with graphics, i'm looking for a minimalistic game with nice gameplay. but if i dont have any good idea in the next 2 days, i dont do it.

2

Is there a trophy like in the picture?

2

@coderash Lol! No trophy... But that is a good idea. Maybe I'll look into it?

2

@KatyaDelaney Cool, It would be sick, maybe small 3d printed ones for runners up

2

Hey there was this game called "The camel" It has been plagiarized from me. when I created it. He/she took all credit. while I had been taking my time in school on this project and I was going to upload it on the challenge board so you can see it. I call it "The Camel Game".

2

Does repl.it have support for openGL if so, how?

I tried using the arcade library for python and returns the following error:

1

@finnbuhse oof that's a hefty error my guy

2

Can we use Unity?

1

@DevTops No, everything has to be created on Repl.it.

2

Are you only giving a bitcoin to the first place team or for every award?

2

@KarthikPyneni It's the Grand Prize! So first place only

1

@KatyaDelaney Is there one for the second/third like the AI challenge?
