h
bramley (248)

Hello!
Last May I think, I held the first ever BramJam Game Jam. People seemed to like it enough, so I decided to do another. The theme is...
Multiplayer Halloween
I'm excited to see what you guys have. All info is on the website, but here are some important points:

Commentshotnewtop
DynamicSquid (4532)

Wait how i can make multiplayer game if i have no friends?

DynamicSquid (4532)

@HahaYes squids dont have noes smh

DynamicSquid (4532)

@HahaYes you what else is cool? Squids

RohilPatel (1459)

oh...i thought u were gonna say me! @DynamicSquid

rediar (414)

@DynamicSquid hire friends or make them yourself

HahaYes (1284)

@rediar ah yes modern solutions require modern problems

elipie (323)

@rediar and make them do your homework

Codemonkey51 (923)

Yes squids (and squods) are cool, but also this: https://github.com/DynamicSquid/squid + my random comments on commits @DynamicSquid

Leroy01010 (397)

@DynamicSquid buy a friend from ebay thats where i get my friends

LTI2 (113)

@Leroy01010 Ebay? phhhhh sound effect. I buy them from the dark web.

RahulChoubey1 (86)

@HahaYes you mean that modern problems require modern solutions, right? Or am I mistaken?

HahaYes (1284)

@RahulChoubey1 to have modern solutions you must have modern problems

Codemonkey51 (923)

I just posted another comment :) @DynamicSquid

DJWang (1247)

@DynamicSquid I make friends the old fashioned way--I print them

ethanshaozz1928 (24)

@DynamicSquid yes you definetly should make a halloween squid game

Coder100 (12436)

also why do people now add this to their CSS:

body { font-size: 2vw; }

This isn't even responsive design, this is lazy design.

bramley (248)

@Coder100 This was originally just a draft of the site but I completely forgot about the jam so I didn't have time to fix

eggirl (3)

Does it have to be on replit?

bramley (248)

@eggirl Yeah, it has to be able to be run on Repl.it. This might sound oddly specific, but Unity projects are accepted as long as you can embed it into an HTML repl. Just thought I'd mention as it was a common question last time!

Bigbodyboy21 (24)

Everyone will be making five nights at freddies

Pankak (46)

Hi,
One of the participants is using an old game for this jam, and adding some multiplayer components to it. They claimed you were okay with it, but this is rather unfair, as they've basically used a project they have been working on prior to the jam as a huge head start.

I'm wondering what your rules are with this, since the whole point of game jams is to make a game from scratch, not build on an existing project you've been working on for weeks.

Thanks!

@piemadd @rediar @adcharity @sixbeeps

rediar (414)

@Pankak Who is this participant? @bramley should probably handle this also.

bramley (248)

@Pankak I said to entirely rewrite the code (good practice with our without them participating in a jam). If you know that they aren't, email me at [email protected] and I can either remove points from their score or disqualify them.

Pankak (46)

@bramley It's RayhanADev, not saying they copied code over 100% but the game looks basically identical so far with the gameplay being the exact same (they've made a few posts about beta testing what not)

RayhanADev (1215)

@Pankak @bramley @rediar @piemadd @AdCharity @SixBeeps
This address is based to Pankak, but I do encourage the judges to read it as well:
If you are basing your comment on what the game “looks” like then you are making a terribly incorrect judgement. I rewrote the whole code on the day just before the Jam started but after it was announced (and to prove it wasn’t forked, the original was an HTML, CSS, & JS Repl and this one is NodeJS Repl). It did not take me “weeks” to code it, as a matter of fact making version 1 took me three days and 1 night of work and rewriting the code for version 2 took me a whole day of sitting through, rewriting line by line.

Also the assumption that game looks “basically identical“ is highly exaggerated as well. The original game was very basic spawn and movement on a canvas. The submission for the Jam is me and elipie working together on has a refined gameplay and introduces (or is in the process of making) multiple features that didn’t exist before, including Personal Stats, Global Leaderboards Stats & Missions, Local Game Features, and honestly if we have time Global Game-rooms as well. Judging based on a beta version that I released on Repl to test single-player stats is not fair at all.

At this point if you still feel that I am cheating then, ask Coder100. He’s not on the team but he has seen the code. He knows just how different it is compared with the original. While what you (think you) see in that beta is the same, I can assure you it quite different. It is not fair to judge based on what you see when you haven’t even seen the code. Thanks, and have a great day!
~ RayhanADev (That Pumpkin Game)

Pankak (46)

@RayhanADev never said you were, I was just making sure with the judges.

RayhanADev (1215)

@Pankak yes well from this thread I found, it does seem very well like you are accusing me.

Pankak (46)

@RayhanADev I'm not even participating what motive would I have to accuse you, I was just wondering about the rules in case I would join in the future

RayhanADev (1215)

@Pankak dude, I’m just calling it as I see it, and from what I see you accuse me of using previous existing code and the judges are saying they may dock points because of a false, baseless accusation.
I’m not blaming you on anything, but I am giving my two cents on the matter which I certainly feel entitled to.

Pankak (46)

@RayhanADev Why are you getting aggressive? I'm just asking the judges, if you think what you did was fine then just tell the judges and not passive aggressively attack me lmao.

RayhanADev (1215)

@Pankak am I being passive aggresive? Sorry 🙁... I don’t mean to, it’s just I feel offended that you incorrectly base assumptions without even knowing full facts. I guess I’ll back off, but I seriously claim innocence in this matter and fully believe I am adhering to any and all rules.

rediar (414)

@RayhanADev @Pankak
Alright, pankak does have a legitimate concern, and rayhan, what your doing seems fine, but you probably can understand why pankak might be concerned. Anyways, be nice to each other alright?

RayhanADev (1215)

@rediar Understood! (Thanks for getting back btw! Much appreciated.)

Summit (27)

wait does it have to be multiplayer?
can it just be singleplayer

Kookiez (305)

@Summit no i don't think so as they specified that it was going to be a multiplayer game:

i guess not, according to the website

bramley (248)

@OrangeJooce123 Yeah @Summit has to be multiplayer. You can do local multiplayer (like one person using WASD while the other uses the arrow keys)

realTronsi (840)

@bramley Is it just me or does it seem like nobody is actually doing online multiplayer lmao

RayhanADev (1215)

@bramley are we allowed to stretch multiplayer to meaning that each person plays to contribute to a global goal (say for our game, we track the pumpkins a person clicks so a global/multiplayer mission would be total global pumpkins). I’m asking so that we have something to submit as a fallback, because we are trying to make a splitscreen but if that doesn’t work I want us to still have a submission.

CatR3kd (388)

tag two electric boogaloo Oh yeah grian refrence

mkhoi (309)

Yay! It's also cool that Repl.it sponsored this

DJWang (1247)

Does it have to be multiplayer?

realTronsi (840)

@DJWang multiplayer doesn't have to be necessarily online, it could be a 2-player game

elipie (323)

Question: Can you submit the project before the end of the jam?
@rediar @bramley

bramley (248)

@elipie Yeah that's perfectly fine

elipie (323)

@bramley ok, and also can you use a prexisting repl, or do you have to start over?

bramley (248)

@elipie You can already have some code, just rewrite it

RayhanADev (1215)

@bramley Elipie and I making the Pumpkin Game, except better so I rewrote all the code like the day after you announced the jam and we’ve been working on it. Do we need to make a new Repl and rewrite all the code, fork the new Repl that we’re working on, or just use what we’re doing right now. Thanks, Ray!

EpicRaisin (227)

I think imma join the BramJam 2
(electric BOOgaloo)

Jeydin21 (61)

Where do we submit our games?

realTronsi (840)

@Jeydin21 read the info on the website, you can email them a link to your repl or if you don't feel comfortable with emailing you can make a post and ping them

Code1Tech (89)

kinda need to fix the website, lol.

bramley (248)

@Code1Tech Ah sorry I thought I'd fixed that, I'll get it done later today

pepelaugh (659)

uhh so it has to be online multiplayer, eg node servers?

elipie (323)

@pepelaugh it can be a local game which is some people playing on the same computer

pepelaugh (659)

@elipie ohh okay no need for unity then python text rpg it is lmao

elipie (323)

@pepelaugh lmao, how would that be 2 or three local players?

pepelaugh (659)

@elipie uh... party system with flask

EpicGamer007 (1098)

Getting sponsored by replit is sooo sick. Nice. Anyways, I have a few questions:

  • I personally would prefer not emailing the response to you because I would have to use my email and I would rather not reveal it. Is it possible to submit it by dm's on discord or something?
  • Is it allowed to use songs we find on YouTube? So we do not have to create sound effects and songs by ourselves.

Yeah that's all the questions I have right now..

bramley (248)

@EpicGamer007 Yeah, DMing me is fine. I'm the one with the ahhhHHHH role on the jam discord server. And for music, as long as you have permission from the artist or it's royalty free, it's all cool.

EpicGamer007 (1098)

@bramley , well... about that... What if there is a song and we cannot ask the artist if we can use the music? Can we just credit them by posting the link to the video?

Leroy01010 (397)

@EpicGamer007 I think u just have to get i t royalty free, or you could end up somewhere

lightningrock (139)

You get how many sd cards for third place? It says cards

rediar (414)

@Bookie0 its supposed to be a short jam lol

Bookie0 (4987)

still, I have school, tests hw, my parents are super strict, tbh I'm not supposed to be coding during the school week (I'm doing this in secret shh) lmao so I rly don't have a time to do much @rediar

realTronsi (840)

@Bookie0 most jams are shorter. Most unity jams are under a week, most being 3 days

Bookie0 (4987)

Yea, but still not rly fair lol, especially for those in high school where tests and hw are very popular among teachers (not us tho lol) @realTronsi

realTronsi (840)

@Bookie0 well it's not just you, and a big part of jams are time management imo. At least we got the weekend so it's still doable.

Bookie0 (4987)

I see what u mean, but for people like me, especially with strict parents and a limited weekend to do stuff, I just can’t really. I also have an unusually early bedtime, so there’s really no time lol. Anyways, I’ll try, but still... wish the jam was 1 week earlier, I’m just back from break. Oh well, next time maybe lol @realTronsi

realTronsi (840)

@Bookie0 they don't even let you code?

Kookiez (305)

@Bookie0 oh sad this week is my break

Bookie0 (4987)

well, you see, I'm not supposed to be coding during the school week (getting distracted, etc.) and not supposed to be texting my friends or using discord. The reason I'm even on here is by secret, a little bit at a time. I don't really get that much time to code, and if I do, it's always interrupted. Besides, hw, doesn't really let me much time... @realTronsi

RayhanADev (1215)

EEEEEE! Time to work on the Pumpkin Game again xD!!!!!!

bramley (248)

@RayhanADev You have to make a new project for this jam, can't continue work from another. You can rebuild your Pumpkin Game if you like, but using the preexisting code isn't allowed.

elipie (323)

@RayhanADev idea: make the pumpkin game with two screens, and the first player (screen) to get a certain number of points, wins! You wanna team? Or are u gonna do this solo? Cause I can make games, but I feel like I have more of a chance to win with a partner.

RayhanADev (1215)

@elipie Hey you wanna! The code can get... interesting in places but I’m down for working with you if you want!

ironblockhd (412)

Do you need to submit or start on october 21st?

elipie (323)

@bramley can you work with other people to make one big game, or does it have to be a one-person project

elipie (323)

oh wait the last bram jam was last year? im getting old...

bramley (248)

@elipie Only 5ish months. Still, time's flying

elipie (323)

@bramley yeah. Can this jam be worked on with multiple people, or no?

bramley (248)

@elipie Yeah, a team is fine. Just want to make sure you know that the physical prizes will only be given to one member.

elipie (323)

@bramley ok. Just wanted to know. And if we get 1st or second, we probably gonna get an e book.

Coder100 (12436)

imagine getting sponsored

bramley (248)

@RohilPatel Yup, has to run in a repl. This could be a unity project or something embedded into an HTML repl, for anyone else.

ZDev1 (818)

cannot get /home
you really need some help

bramley (248)

@ZDev1 Lmao yeah, I had to post this real quick from the doctor's office after getting an x-ray. I'll fix it in a bit

DynamicSquid (4532)

Wait you got sponsered by repl.it? Nice!

RayhanADev (1215)

@DynamicSquid wow that’s actually really cool xD.

HahaYes (1284)

@fuzzyastrocat this is what I'm talking about

fuzzyastrocat (1461)

@HahaYes Ah ok. Yeah, I think I'm going to pass on it.

bramley (248)

@fuzzyastrocat :( Why? I'm always open to suggestions

fuzzyastrocat (1461)

@bramley I just don't like game dev. Nothing about this Jam in particular really, it seems nicely put together and well thought-out.

bramley (248)

@fuzzyastrocat Ah ok. Maybe next time I can do a general jam
