VolantOS - An operating system made with Volant (Check the jam section)

Okay, so I'm sure you have all seen ReplOS a while back. I decided to give OS Dev another shot, except this time I'm using a jam language (Volant)!
I'm not part of the team of Volant but it seems like a neat low level language.

What this is

This isn't one of those fake operating systems you see that simply chain a bunch of if statements together, this is a real functioning operating system you can compile and run on a physical computer!
I installed QEMU(x86 emulator) on the repl so you can simply press run and see how limited it is right now.

How exactly do you make an os?

EpicGamer007 (612)

@CSharpIsGud , thanks a lot! But one question, I do not use a linux and I cannot get linux on a computer, would it be possible to do this all on repl?

CSharpIsGud (601)

@AbhayBhat You can, but you will have to use qemu and it doesn't have good debugging capability, you really really need it.
You can also use a virtual machine and install something like ubuntu on it.
You can use cygwin as well and it should be pretty similar to compiling on linux.

EpicGamer007 (612)

@CSharpIsGud, i see.. well... in your opinion what is the best languages for os's? C? C++?

CSharpIsGud (601)

@AbhayBhat I think you can do it with C or C++. I've used mostly C for OS Dev

EpicGamer007 (612)

@CSharpIsGud, i see.. Thanks for all ur help!

@AbhayBhat It seems like Volant would work just fine for OS development.

@EpicGamer007 @CSharpIsGud @xxpertHacker You can use any compiled language with low-level capabilities... in theory you could make an OS in Go with unsafe.Pointer but it would be a nightmare.

xxpertHacker (394)

@fuzzyastrocat There's an OS in JavaScript, JS is JiT + interpreted. It also has no low-level capabilities.

fuzzyastrocat (785)

@xxpertHacker However, it's not a true OS, ie you couldn't install it on a stick and boot from it (unless you're talking about something I've never heard of?).

xxpertHacker (394)

@fuzzyastrocat I'm assuming the same, it's a sham.

CSharpIsGud (601)

@xxpertHacker @fuzzyastrocat I tried to find it but I could only find one thats just a webpage that looks like an OS and one thats based on a linux kernel. technically its made using js but most the actual OS work is done by linux.

EpicGamer007 (612)

@CSharpIsGud , replit uses linux os cuz its open source, right?

CSharpIsGud (601)

@EpicGamer007 if they used windows they would have to pay microsoft $$$

EpicGamer007 (612)

@CSharpIsGud , well yea i understand now

xxpertHacker (394)

@CSharpIsGud Yup, that's the one, and that's why I call it a sham or something of the sort: it's really just Linux.
